The Science Behind The Plant
Hoodia may enable the Hypothalamus in the brain to
report fullness after digestion of Hoodia Gordonii.

Hypothalamus: The hypothalamus is an area of the brain that produces hormones that control thirst, hunger, body temperature, sleep, moods, sex drive, and the release of hormones from various glands, primarily the pituitary gland. A region of the brain between the thalamus and the midbrain, that functions as the main control center for the autonomic nervous system by regulation sleep cycles, body temperature, appetite, etc., and that acts as an endocrine gland by producing hormones, including the releasing factors that control the hormonal secretions of the pituitary (1).

Your hypothalamus is part of the body’s endocrine system (1). This decides when you feel hungry or full by the rise of sugar (glucose) in your blood. After eating enough carbohydrates, your blood sugar rises. This convinces your hypothalamus to tell your brain that it’s full. Normally, to get your hypothalamus to slow down your hunger, you would have to eat a great amount of food in order to feel full.
Hoodia Gordonii
*Hoodia is a small, succulent plant that grows wild in the semi-arid Karoo Desert of South Africa.
Many Hoodia species are protected plants, typical of the Namib Desert, ranging from Central Namibia to
southern Angola, especially in plains and rocky areas. Common names include “Busman’s Hat”
and “Queen of the Namib”

Several Species are grown as garden plants, and one species, Hoodia gordonii,
is being investigated for use as an appetite suppressant.

Common names: Ghaap, bitterghaap, wildeghaap, Bobbejaanghaap, Ghobba, Hoodia Cactus.

Hoodia gordonii is a conspicuous spiny cactus-like succulent with angular stems widespread from
the Great Karoo (Parts of W. Cape) Tanqua Karoo and further north to Bushmanland (Mainly the N. Cape)
and dry southern and central parts of Namibia. The genus Hoodia consist of 14 species mainly
confined to South African and Namibia and with the exception of H. parviflora all are edible.

The small flowered species were previously accommodated in the genus Trichocaulon. Most are refer to
as Ghaap and were used as by the indigenous peoples as food or medicine.

According to Smith (1966) in Common Names of South African Plants this species as a food and medicine was regarded as inferior to the true Trichocaulon (the small flowered Hoodia species).

Nevertheless, Ghaap prior have been utilized by the indigenous Khoi and San people
for food and medicine and later by the local white farmers.

The largest of the species are Hoodia parviflora (leeughaap)
an inedible species from northern Kaokoveld (N. Namibia).
Hoodia History

In 1937 a Dutch anthropologist was studying the San Bushman tribe and noticed they used Hoodia Gordonii for appetite suppression (5). The San Bushman is a tribe of people in South Africa which have been long forgotten until Hoodia arrived. They are one of the world’s oldest and more primitive tribes. When it was time to feed the family the men would consume Hoodia fingers before venturing off on their long hunting trips. This would allow them to focus on the kill rather than being distracted by their hunger.

The Powerful affects of Hoodia was first uncovered in 1963 (4). A student at CSIR was studying native foods and plants used by the San Bushman tribe. The results were astounding when after feeding Hoodia to lab rats they discovered suppression in their appetite (2). After over 30 years of research the South African scientist at CSIR noted the active ingredient was Hoodia and obtained a patent on it in 1997.

P57 which is the steroidal glycoside in Hoodia (3) was licensed to a British Firm named Phytopharm. Phytopharm then licensed the patent to American drug giant named Pfizer. The intent was to use the molecule P57 as a base to mass-create a product to meet the demands of millions of people.

After three years of investigation, Pfizer pulled out of the deal, saying it would be too expensive to ever bring to the market. In the mean time, Hoodia can be bought in its purest form at an 400mg dosage by simply purchasing a Slim 400 product now!!

Quality Control
Raw material:

All raw materials come from our privately owned farm in Karoo South Africa. We provide our customers with the
purest Hoodia we offer. Our in house Quality Assurance team analyzes the raw material for authenticity. After
this, it is then sent away to a local South African laboratory to ensure it meets strict International Standards.
Once the analysis is completed a COA (Certificate of Analysis) is issued. After the COA is issued we then export
raw material to the country desired. It is then sent away to another independent lab in the US to ensure active
ingredients are high enough to meet our standards. Only on approval it is then sent away to the various
manufacturers. Most Manufacturers send randomly selected samples of the raw Hoodia Gordonii powder for
further testing. This is to ensure that the Hoodia powder was not tampered with or changed in any way.

Product analysis:

We take the product analysis seriously as well. So, before we accept any Hoodia products from the manufacturer.
We first request them to take a random bottle off the production line and send it to Alkemists Pharmaceuticals for
testing. If proven that the product is pure as the raw ingredient tested. Then at that time we will approve and
accept the full batch. This is recorded for each product that we have manufactured. Each Analysis contains
specific components of herbal products. Lot #’s for each of the ingredients and production methods used.
Once our products actually get to the stores, we then have our independent labs purchase our product with the
same lot # for further testing. This again proves our Hoodia is exactly the same as it first shipped from
South Africa. This in fact avoids counterfeiting and insures our customers they are getting the real stuff.

Strict Controll

Each Lot number issued to the raw Hoodia material and subsequent tests all attest to our strict control on the
product from beginning to end. These tests don’t come cheap, but we here at Slim400 wish to ensure our clients
that they get only the best Hoodia possible. To see or read these tests please click here.
